US: Decline in Smoked Tobacco Products Consumption Slows
Sharp increases in the consumption of pipe tobacco and cigars since 2008 have partly offset declines in cigarette consumption in the US, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although cigarette consumption continued an 11-year downward trend with a 2.5 per cent decline between 2010 and 2011, increases in the use of non-cigarette smoked tobacco products had slowed the long decline in the consumption of all smoked tobacco products taken together.
From 2000 to 2011, the biggest increases were in the consumption of pipe tobacco (482 per cent) and large cigars (233 per cent). The increase in pipe tobacco seems to have been caused by impoverished smokers using this product in place of fine-cut tobacco.
And the increase in the consumption of cigars was said to have been due largely to tobacco manufacturers adding weight to small cigars so they could be classified as large cigars and thereby avoid higher taxes and regulation while, at the same time, retaining a size and shape similar to that of cigarettes.
According to the report, consumption of all smoked tobacco products (including cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco and cigars) declined by 27.5 per cent between 2000 and 2011.
However, the decline was 0.8 per cent between 2010 and 2011.
